I Love The Beach In Summer, But Dread Growing Vegetables

G'Day Folks,

I hate admitting it, but though I love the beach in summer, I dread growing vegetables during the warmer months. I’m really trying hard to get along with nature's unpredictable mood swings this time of year. To be fair she has been quite forgiving so far, but the wet weather has been too much. I can feel the weeds growing around my ears and the almost unstoppable Cluster Caterpillars have arrived like the Spanish Amada during its attempted invasion of England in 1588.

Flea beetles are multiplying faster than the mosquitoes buzzing around our face every time we open the doors. Most of the green leafed veg are looking like they’ve been used for target practice by someone wielding a shotgun.

So why am I so intimidated by the hot season here on the coast? Well, it’s because of the diets we inherited from our colonial past. Unlike the first Australians who lived in a comparatively harmonious state with this vast and unforgiving landscape. Those of us who descend from immigrants, slaves, convicts or the colonisers themselves ended up becoming accustomed to a diet that really doesn’t suit our climate or indeed our ancient and weathered soils.

But here we are and only time will slowly knock sense into us if we are to maximise our time here on this big beautiful planet. And by the way, far from throwing stones at glass houses, I too enjoy a beautiful salad during summer despite how god damn hard it is to grow!
But here’s a little step we can all make towards harnessing nature and her abundance. We have decided to grow Tatsoi (above pic) this summer instead of Baby Spinach. After too many failed crops last summer, I swore never to grow it again. But it’s darn popular, most of you love it and miss it if it’s not in your weekly order. But that means we have to get it all the way from Victoria’s south eastern farms where the cool breezes off the Bass Strait allow them to grow it through summer with less hassle but still double the price.

So I’m asking you all a favour for a farmer who wants to reduce the amount of grey hairs on his head this summer and a landscape that’s more than happy to still provide you with delicious green leafed veg.

Give Tatsoi a fair go, cook with it, have it on a sandwich the same way you would Baby Spinach. Yes it’s tougher, yes it has its own flavour. But I’ve come to love this mighty little green leafy vegetable and you probably guessed it by now…..it can handle a fair dose of nature's summer tantrums.

Have a great week legends!

Thank YOU for joining us on this epic journey & supporting Your local farmer!
