Let’s Talk About Your Body’s Ecosystem
G'Day Folks,
This week I’m not going to talk about the weather. We are all over it, so let us not dwell on it.
But what I want to talk about is your body’s ecosystem. Yes, ecosystem! Something I have come to understand along this farming journey is the relationship between a rich and diverse living soil and the microbiome within our body.
You see, just as the soil beneath our feet is alive—with billions of microorganisms teeming through every handful—so too is our gut. It’s a landscape of its own, made up of bacteria, fungi, and other microbes that play a vital role in digestion, immunity, mental clarity, and overall well-being. What’s truly incredible is how connected these two worlds are.
When soil is healthy—when it’s nourished with compost, cover crops, organic matter, and love—it produces plants that are strong, resilient, and nutrient-dense. Those plants are not just fuel for our bodies; they carry with them the life force of the soil itself. The microbes from the soil, the enzymes, and the natural compounds in these foods help feed and balance our own internal microbiome.
I have seen what poor soil does to plants. They become diseased easily and pests such as aphids attack them without consequence. When we started farming this land, the soil was completely degraded. The plants really struggled to survive and we thought we were doing something wrong.
But as we learned about the miraculous world beneath our feet. We started to do use purely on our soil and nothing else. We did everything possible to create the type of soil life’s little miracle workers wanted to live in. As we added compost and cover crops each year—life returned to our once dead soil. Our plants grew strong, diseases disappeared and the aphids vanished. Our living soil was back doing what it does best—restoring balance to the ecosystem and unlocking the secrets our plants needed to thrive.
And I’m here to tell you—your body's microbiome is no different to the soil. Feed it good food and it will thrive. The same miracle workers exist inside of you as they do in our soil. And they can help your body the same way our soil microbes helped our plants.
It’s a beautiful, invisible cycle: soil life feeds plant, plant feeds human, human cares for soil. When one part of the system is out of balance, the rest starts to wobble too. This is why we farm the way we do. It’s not just about growing food—it’s about growing health. For you, for the earth, for our children.
So when you eat our vegetables, know this: you are not just eating chemical free food—you are eating living food. Food that is part of a living web of life. And in a world that often feels disconnected, this is one way we can stay rooted—to that which not only sustains us—but nourishes more than our physical body.
Thank YOU for joining us on this epic journey & supporting Your local farmer!
